Pacific Spotted Ratfish

Spotted ratfish have smooth skin, large green eyes, a rabbit-like face and a mouth with plate-like grinding teeth. The tail is tiny and streamer-like, so for propulsion they flap their large, wing-like pectoral fins. Ratfish cruise just above the seafloor searching for crunchy food like crabs and clams.

Spotted ratfish are among the deepest-living fishes. They are related to sharks and are considered the missing link between the bony and cartilaginous fishes because they have the characteristics of both.

Ratfish have a long venomous spine in front of the dorsal fin.

Hardly a wolf, not really an eel, this fierce-looking fish spends the day quietly in a cave, wriggling out at night to feed. Its body is ideally shaped for living in crevices. They're not dangerous unless provoked.  A mated pair of wolf-eels share a rocky cave. The female lays her eggs among the rocks and both fish guard them until the young hatch.
